We have one runner tonight at Chelmsford

The wind nearly cuts you in half this morning and I have yet to venture out onto the wide open expanse of Southfields. The first two lots have been close to home on Hamilton Hill where at least I had some trees and a bit of fencing to shelter behind. All has gone reasonably well but, once again a non-runner by a member of staff, which drives you to distraction when the board has already been done as to who rides what. I think the weather is set to stay like this for the next few days and a cold but dryish March is predicted.

We have one runner today, tonight at Chelmsford. Topalova runs in the last, the 8.55. Gabriele Malune rides and gets 7lbs off. She ran quite well last time and I think she certainly has an each way chance again tonight. It may be that she wants a bit further eventually, but I am quite happy with her. She is drawn well, has only got 8st 7lbs to carry and must have a squeak in this type of race.

It was very sad to read of the death of Brian Proctor who was a very good jockey and work rider. He worked the majority of his life for Sir Gordon Richards and Major Dick Hern and what a godsend he was to those two trainers. A brilliant horseman, he could get any horse going well and when you have these types of people involved in your business, they are worth their weight in gold. The modern generation of jockeys now retire and become a jockeys coach or a bloodstock advisor, rather than do the job that Brian did. It is such a shame as they would have so much to offer and could help trainers unbelievably, but this old fashioned, or what is now perceived as old fashioned, work rider, is nearly a thing of the past. There are so many top class horses that benefited from his handling of them. He is the like of which we will never see again. Our condolences go to his wife and family.
