It's a bright but very cold morning with the temperature way down on yesterday, but there's no rain and none likely this week. The ground is called "Good, good to firm" on the Rowley Mile for the start of the Craven Meeting. We have kept to the polytracks all morning and everything has ticked over well.

Back of the Flat

By all accounts the Lingfield bonanza on Good Friday was very well attended and there was competitive racing for the prize money. We were told there was only going to be one meeting on Good Friday but now there are three - how long before there are six? The other big disappointment was that the £100 a lead up for all stable staff working on Good Friday, which has been given for the last three years to all runners, was dropped. Whilst on the subject of perks for staff, why are they the only professionals on the racetrack who don't get offered any free food? Owners, trainers, jockeys, stewards, and officials all do, but the stable staff have to pay for their own.

It's the first day of the Craven Meeting today and the first day of the major British classic trials. There will be plenty of bubbles burst and one or two blown up. Plus we have the Craven Breeze-Up Sale starting tonight at Tattersalls where I am sure there will be many huge bids for the choicest lots.
