We had a good visit round the studs

"So sweetly she bade me adieu,

I thought that she bade me return."

William Shenstone.

It’s slightly warmer this morning although we had another ground frost, but I think with the wind dropping, that has helped a lot. It has been one of those mornings yet again with non-runners staff wise and one’s going home ill. It is enough to drive an eskimo to move to the Bahamas. The rest of the staff has been in good form though and I thank them for their efforts. We have been cantering on Southfield Round for most of the morning and everything has been going well so far.

We still have two mares to foal at home, and one is quite overdue now. I thought she was about to produce last night, but she had a rethink from 10 o’clock onwards. It must be tonight or at least by the end of the weekend. It was an interesting day yesterday as I took my Saudi Arabian visitor around Lanwades, Darley and Juddmonte stud farms to look at their stallions, and I must say everything was presented looking pictures, as I knew they would be. It is fascinating to see these top horses, from Dubawi and Frankel, downwards and I was asking the question, if you didn’t know what they were named, their performance, or their stallion record, which did he like the best? I think that is always a good test and is usually not too far off the mark. I always enjoy getting everybody’s different points of view as to what type of horse they like.

I see the Jockey Club had an increased turnover which gave them an operating profit which was nearly a million more than last year. They put all their money back into the industry as they have no shareholders who require dividends. The chief executives comments on Kempton were encouraging, as we definitely need an all-weather track here at Newmarket within the next few years. The staff issues are not going to go away, and it would be a major help, both for training and competing.
