We have one runner today at Nottingham

Bracken Brae and Astrosecret

It’s overcast this morning but warm and no wind. I think this is the way it is going to be for the next few days. We have been doing some fast work Across The Flat at first lot with the other lots on the polytracks on racecourse side. I am not sure why the heathmen have kept the Peat Moss or the Watered Gallop open as the ground on the Summer Gallop and Across The Flat is perfect. When you have hallowed ground like the Peat Moss it needs looking after and should only be used in really dry conditions.

Koin and Honey Blossom

Budgie ran much too free yesterday and I knew after a furlong he would have no hope of finishing as he was ridden the complete opposite of my instructions. In this instance, the case for all instructions to be available to the stewards, like they are in Hong Kong, would be feasible, but it is just one of those days you put behind you and forget. I think you will see a different Budgie next time out.

Astrostorm is our only runner today at Nottingham in the 4.50, the one mile six furlong handicap. He has had three runs and is now handicapped and this is more of his scene. I think there could be some pace in this race which should suit us and let’s hope he has a sound enough run today.   The ground at Nottingham is always a problem as it is either ‘soft’ and gluey or ‘firm’ and pretty hard, so it will be interesting to see what the forecast ‘good’ ground actually rides like.

Cantering up Hamilton Hill

The furore about running a no hoper in the Derby continues today in the Racing Post, with ex jockey, Jimmy Lindley, having his say. He was recalling one of the roughest Derby’s when Hethersett, the favourite, was bought down, amongst others. One horse broke its leg and a lot of the jockeys went to hospital. He thinks this was caused by an inexperienced jockey and let’s hope if the BHA do allow them to run, she keeps well out of harm’s way, for everybody’s sake.

St Anthony (who Pauline has a share in)

A very Happy Birthday today to Pauline Rickett, one of my most lucky and loyal owners, who is now into her 90’s and still going as strong as ever. She has smoked all her life, I think she told me she started when she was 8, and it has certainly done her no harm. She always smokes outside and has even got a chair in the shed for when it is raining. What a marvellous lady she is. Have a very Happy Birthday Pauline.
