First lot head off to canter down Railway Land as dawn breaks

"When we love, we always strive to become better than we are. When we strive to become better than we are, everything around us becomes better too."

Smokey Oakey (Butch) and Mystery Star (Colin)

It started off a nice, bright morning and quite mild, although the wind was pretty sharp but, as the day progressed, it has got very wet and cool. I took the first two lots across to the Al Bahathri on Railway Land via the Town canter and everything came up there well. There are still some to run in the next few weeks of the season.

Astroleo (Zeehan) and Old Boy Ted (Colin)

Munro's Dragon did not run too badly yesterday, probably as well as his handicap mark suggested he should. I am sure he can win races next season, especially over a bit further but he is in the sales tomorrow and we will have to see if we retain him or not.

Cotton Grass (Ashley) and Battery Power (Nikki)

The Horses-in-Training sale is in full flight here in Newmarket with many overseas buyers competing with the jumping boys for the prized lots. It is amazing how many countries have racing programmes and more and more are opening up, especially in the middle-East and some of the newer European countries. There are an awful lot of withdrawals though from the sale, in fact around 500, which is nearly a third of the whole entry.

The Acclamation ex Housekeeper filly being lunged

Angie has gone to Garrowby this morning. She set off in the pitch dark at 5.30 am and has already reported that the weanlings she sent up a month ago have really grown and developed. It is marvellous rearing land as I have said before with very good grass and water. She also reported that the home-grown yearlings, which are being broken in now are also thriving and getting the idea quickly. Alan and Tina will get them up to the stage where they are ready to ride and then they will come down to us for Steve Avery and his riders to ride them away. It is a circle that has now started to reap major dividends with Ted Spread and Brushing both winning black-type races this year and many more entering the winning enclosure.
