The new game machines are set to go in the shops ...

We have one runner today at Yarmouth

Tuesday, 01 August 2017

"And this, our life, exempt from public haunt, finds tongues in trees, books in the running brooks, sermons in stones and good in everything."

William Shakespeare.

Cantering on Hamilton Hill

It’s a bright morning with no rain. Today looks to stay dry, but Wednesday / Thursday onwards there are bands of sweeping rain. We have had a very busy morning with horses going off racing and with the ground changing, we have had to slightly amend our plans with one of the horses now not running. We have got on well in the yard, with everything doing two good canters and they are eating as well as I have known them to.

I stated above that the going has changed at Yarmouth, from good to soft yesterday, to good to firm, good in places this morning. On talking to the clerk of the course at 7 o’clock, we decided not to run Velvet Voice on the ground. It is marvellous when the clerks are honest and give a clear opinion of the going. The one at Yarmouth, Richard Aldous, is one of the best, and he thinks the ground will continue to dry all day long. Our only runner therefore is Four Fifty Three in the first race at 1.40. He has improved with each race and he could be in the shake up again today.

The one good thing about the rain is that the fertilizer we put on the stud has really got into the ground and the paddocks are starting to come back really well. Paddock management is one of the main items on the farm as without good grass you have nothing. Angie, with the great help of Ryan and Stephen, do an amazing job in keeping everything in shipshape order. It is a never ending job keeping the maintenance up to date and it is like painting the Forth Road Bridge, in that as soon as you get to the end, you have to start all over again.

Some of the early foals are really getting big now and it won’t be far off before the weaning starts and the yearlings will come into training. I am sure each year goes quicker, but it may be because I seem to be so much busier.
