We have one runner today at Chelmsford

Alfred Sheinwold.

A misty start to the day

It’s a misty, dampish morning with rolls of fog across the heath at first light. The temperature has dropped quite a lot from the beginning of the week and it looks like staying this way right through the weekend. We have been using all sorts of canters and artificial gallops this morning and everything has ticked over well. We have one non-runner again and I will be making it permanent very shortly.

Velvet Voice

We have one runner today, this afternoon at Chelmsford. Bracken Brae runs in the two mile handicap at 2.20. She is a multiple course winner and likes it here. There are a couple of very progressive three-year-olds in the race, and it looks on paper to be reasonably competitive, but I am hoping that she can run better than her last two outings where she had good reasons for running below form. I have been pleased with her work, but the one big negative I think today, is that the race could be run at a stop go pace and be very tactical.

It is great prize money once again at Chelmsford, with the first race, a mile novice, being £19,000 guaranteed and the fillies’ conditions race being £45,000 guaranteed. Why other courses can’t put this kind of prize money on I don’t know.

First lot over, walking back to the yard

I am delighted to tell you that our farrier, Becky, had a great weekend with an ex inmate of ours, Singing Hinnie. She had been showing at the big Retraining of Racehorses event at Aintree last weekend. She won the novice class and was runner up in the championship, which is a fantastic achievement.

There are so many horses that we have found second careers for and I had a lovely letter this week saying how well Peeps had played in the national championships for polocrosse last weekend. It is marvellous when we get pictures and letters of appreciation and I am delighted to say that we have just found three more very good homes for some of our horses.
