The new game machines are set to go in the shops ...

They are all a bit fresh this morning

Velvet Voice on Hamilton Hill on Saturday

It’s overcast this morning and after a dampish night, we have got a dull morning with no wind and the temperature about normal. It looks like being like this throughout the week with a few showers forecast, especially for the middle of the week. Autumn is definitely beginning to settle in. The horses were very fresh this morning after an easy day on Sunday and we have been using the Rubbing House Canter with most of them. With everybody in, the flag is still up.

Astroshadow ready to jump off at first lot

Topapinion ran with plenty of promise on Saturday night at Chelmsford, where the crowd was unbelievable, primarily because Boyzone was playing afterwards. I think the venue has plenty going for it, especially the prize money, which was brilliant on Saturday night and once they get the new grandstand built, it will be even better. They have a good catchment area, with easy access and I am sure once Newmarket builds its own all-weather, the two tracks will complement each other. Topapinion, as I say, ran with great promise and the race should be kept noted as I think everything will win out of it.

There has been plenty of political chat, and even a TV programme on the problem gamblers who use the machines in the betting shops and how the experts believe the amount of maximum stake should be reduced from £100 to £2. The government get an enormous amount of revenue from taxing the bookies on these machines and have been reluctant to reduce the figure, but public opinion is such that I think they will be forced to act and reduce the maximum play to a much lower level. This could mean closure of betting shops according to bookies, which would then have a knock on effect to our industry as the media rights payments would drop as every shop is shut. It would be interesting to see how this all progresses.
