The Motivator ex Mega filly being lunged

THE HORSE

Where in this wide world can man find nobility without pride,
Friendship without envy,
Or beauty without vanity?
Here, where grace is served with muscle
And strength by gentleness confined
He serves without servility; he has fought without enmity.
There is nothing so powerful, nothing less violent.
There is nothing so quick, nothing more patient.

The Acclamation ex Housekeeper filly having a lunge before being ridden away

We have had a lot of rain overnight but that had cleared before daybreak, leaving us with a mild, overcast and breezy morning. What a difference the extra hour of daylight makes to our morning: first lot is able to pull out in the light now, which makes it so much safer and more pleasant for horse and rider. First and second lot are having a canter up Warren Hill polytrack and Steve is hoping to get some more of the yearlings ridden away. It is always exciting getting the yearlings ridden and seeing how they progress over the next few months, wondering if there is a potential champion amongst them. They say that 'no trainer ever committed suicide with an untried two year old in his yard' and anyone involved with horses can appreciate the truth in that statement.

Ashley leans across the Singspiel ex Humility filly in her box

Smokey Oakey ran a solid race yesterday to finish sixth in what looked an above average novice hurdle; he was not fluent over the second last when it really mattered but all-in-all it was a satisfactory introduction. Locum's race was run at a muddling pace and although handy, he was a bit keen at times. Richard Hughes gave him every chance but he plugged on at one pace up the straight; however, afterwards we discovered that he had lost a front shoe during the race, which would explain his slightly disappointing performance.

Steve keeps an eye on Nikki as she rides away the Acclamation filly in her box

With the end of the turf season approaching this Saturday, things are getting quieter here at Flint Cottage. So, we have no runners for the next couple of days until Astrodiva runs at Lingfield on Thursday.
