They are not children ...

We have two runners today at Brighton

"A true friend sees past your excuses to the real reason it’s not your fault."

Robert Brault.

It’s an overcast, good drying morning with a reasonable breeze and I think it is going to stay that way for the majority of the week. I do hope so as I want some good ground for the weekend if I am to run anything. We have a reasonable complement of staff in, and even with two runners we have been getting on ok in the yard. We have been using both polytrack and grass on racecourse side and all has gone well.

Legging up for second lot

We have two runners today, both at Brighton. Astrobreeze is our first runner at 3.45. She is making her debut today and will learn a considerable amount from it. This is a tricky course to start a horse on, but the experience she gains today will be a great benefit. George Wood, claiming 3lbs, takes his first ride for us, but he is an able apprentice and if he keeps his head on straight, could have a long career ahead of him. Our other runner, Clearance, is in the last race at 5.20, the hands and heels apprentice handicap. We are not drawn brilliantly at 14, and whether this course will suit is debatable, but he is improving and it is not beyond the bounds of possibility of him running into a place at a big price.

Koin walking round the yard

It is great to see that Enable will be kept in training for another year as she will be a real crowd puller whatever she goes. She has only been lightly raced this year and I am sure she will be trained to emulate Treve and win two Arcs. It will certainly take a top notcher to beat her next year if she is on song, but there is always the possibility that these fillies can go off. Let’s hope that she is as good as ever.

Busy mucking out before going racing

I must have a moan about the weekend. We had a runner in the 9.15 at Wolverhampton on Saturday night - it was that late because one of the races split. If I tell you that the horse and lads didn’t get home until after two Sunday morning, you will start to realise how hard they work and how the prize money has to be improved dramatically. The main reason they were late home was because of wide loads blocking the roads and diversions for roadworks. If people want to bet, they should be made to bet on American or other overseas races, which can be found to bet on all night long. I think the latest time for racing in England should be around 8 p.m. Situations like this happen almost on a daily basis and if we are to keep staff, something needs sorting out.
