They are not children ...

A beautiful, autumn morning...

First lot, led by Akula, prepares to set off at the bottom of Warren Hill

A beautiful, autumn morning with a few light clouds. The trees are starting to shed their leaves now and they are turning those lovely, golden colours of autumn, so on a mild morning like today there is no better place to be than on Newmarket Heath. First lot and some of second lot have been having one canter up Warren Hill polytrack with Steve has been getting more of the yearlings ridden.

When yearlings come in from the sales, part of the breaking process has already been done. They are so well handled, they will have been lunged, they will already have been rugged that the next step of preparing them to be ridden is relatively straightforward. Alan and Tina have been doing some of the groundwork with the homebreds up at Garrowby so that, again, by the time they arrive at Flint Cottage, they have learnt the basics. The fundamental point, when breaking the horses, is that each horse needs to be brought along at their own speed and not asked to move on to the next stage, until they have digested the lessons from the previous stage.

I read, with sadness, in the Racing Post today that Jim McGrath is resigning from the BHA board. Jim is hugely well respected within the industry and he makes some very sound points this morning about Racing for Change and the direction, in which they are trying to take racing. The fact that he will no longer be sitting on the BHA board, as the voice of reason and experience, will leave the BHA and the whole of racing the poorer for it.
