It's an overcast morning with no wind and the temperature is not too bad considering the time of year. We have been cantering on the Rubbing House polytrack after a warm up walk and trot on the Hamilton Hill. At present the Jockey Club are refurbishing the trotting rings, which is badly needed, and everybody is finding different places to warm up before cantering. Only one staff non runner today, and having had runners yesterday and with our horses going up to the sales this morning, we've only got four lots.

Another late night last night coming back after racing at Kempton with a road closure at Duxford and the diversion signs in a complete muddle. At least I know my way through the outskirts of Cambridge, but it put another half hour on the journey. Bracken Brae blew for a good half hour after her race but travelled well for a long way, and will now strip fitter next time. I shall be running her under both codes. Dixon was slightly disappointing. He heads for the sales tomorrow. He is a very attractive, sound horse and he will suit a foreign land where the ground is on the fast side.

There are plenty of articles today about the machines in bettting shops with many different opinions on which way things should go. It looks to me that the smaller independent bookmakers are relieved by the consultancy period and they are also pleased that the government are looking for clear cut evidence as to how the machines cause problems. As I said yesterday, I don't think much will happen, only a cut in the maximum play amount and a undertaking by the bookmakers to self exclude addicted players.

The Europeans are getting plenty of press over in America where the two days of the Breeders' Cup start tomorrow. The draws have been very kind to us this year, but the course is sharp, the turf is very firm, it's a different style of racing and lasix can be used. So it will be very hard and a great achievement if any of them can get on the podium - but let's hope they do and we are all behind them.
