''Change is inevitable. In a progressive country, change is constant.''

- Benjamin Disraeli (Edinburgh 1867)

Was that said 143 years ago, or did I hear it said yesterday?

An overcast day but not too cold and everything has had a good, healthy exercise. All the horses are in good form, are eating very well and, even, the fillies' coats are starting to look better.

Watch Chain and Call it on

The first day of the Chester May meeting, which if you have never gone to before, you must make every effort to attend. The atmosphere, the closeness to the horses, the town itself are all unique and the Chester racecourse committee makes a very big effort to make everybody welcome.

Astromoon and Astrodonna

It is Chester Cup day today, which we, unfortunately, missed out on with Dazinski but, hopefully, he can run in it next year; this two and an half mile handicap has always been one of my favourite races of the year but, as yet, I have been unable to win it. My tip for today's race is Halla San, who ran well in this race last year. The only thing to remember at Chester is, don't back anything drawn wide and make sure you get there very early, as the traffic is horrendous.
