A light dusting of snow overnight...

Wednesday, 22 December 2010

Good King Wenceslas looked out
On the feast of Stephen
When the snow lay round about
Deep and crisp and even
Brightly shone the moon that night
Though the frost was cruel
When a poor man came in sight
Gath'ring winter fuel

Second lot trot in the indoor ride, led by Astroleo and Abbi

A light dusting of snow overnight but only just enough to cover the ground; listening to the weather reports, it seems as if we have got away very lightly in Newmarket. It feels appreciably warmer this morning with the temperature slightly above freezing, which makes life much easier, as the taps start to thaw and water runs again. The older horses, first lot, went out for a canter but everything else has stayed in the indoor ride, where they are at least safe. They say the weather is going to warm up after Boxing day, so let's hope we can get back to normal.

Joe the Coat heads over to the indoor ride

Brian Clifford says Kempton is raceable at the moment and, as long as they don't get too much snow between now and Sunday, the meeting should go ahead. It will be a travesty if Kauto Star does not get the chance to make history on Boxing Day in the King George VI chase and beat Desert Orchid's record. Desert Orchid won the race four times between 1986 and 1990 but did not win it in 1987, so if Kauto Star wins on Sunday he will be the first horse to register four consecutive wins. This will be a marvellous tribute to this fantastic chaser and I shall be glued to the TV on Sunday, to see if we can watch history being made.

Third lot leave Flint Cottage under the watchful eye of Iain

We were going to announce the winner of the caption competition today but we are still getting loads of replies, so I am going to hold off for one more day and will announce the winner tomorrow. Please keep your captions coming - they are brilliant!
