A mildish morning....

"Friendship isn't a big thing. It's a million little things."

Barwick and Ron

A mildish morning but quite damp and the overnight frost, that was forecast, did not materialize. The Heath for one reason or another didn't seem quite as busy the first two lots, which was quite nice as you could easily get on any canter and have a pleasant walk home. Just our normal weekend canters and conditioning work with the youngsters. It is imperative that you get this slower work into the horses at this stage, as they need a slow, steady build-up before the faster work to come.

I see the Morning Line on Channel 4  is about to get a re-vamp and it will be interesting to see how it goes down. One of my reservations would be the introduction of presenters, who know very little about the sport but are thought by the producers to have an attraction for the viewers. This will not only put off the core viewers but have the reverse effect when trying to attract new ones. There must be plenty of professionals, who would be willing to have a go on the programme and an idea of guest presenters, to find out who might step up to the plate, would be a good idea. What is the point of bringing rugby players, who are already on many programmes, into our sport - we should promote from within the industry. I agree the programme needs to change and change for the better but let's hope its not like 'Racing for Pennies': just another weak attempt.

Ron (Dan)

Some good racing today at Haydock and Ascot with the Champion Hurdle trial and the Peter Marsh Chase at Haydock. It's a pity the Champion Hurdle trial is so weak and it is also a pity that there are only three runners in the valuable chase at 1.30 pm. At Ascot we have the Victor Chandler, which is always a good race with Masterminded, trying to cheer up his owner after the disappointment at Kempton.

Phil is off to watch Arsenal today, who are at home to Wigan and should continue on their winning ways. The Owls are away to Leyton Orient and we need to keep our promotion push going after our poor showing last week. I think we have bought a new forward this week - costing a little bit less than £24 million - the fee  was half a dozen eggs and a cake but let's hope he can run and kick it with both feet!
