The two year olds in perfect formation behind Barwick

Another drop in temperature this morning and parts of the walking grounds have got ice on them but there was no biting wind to make it feel even colder. It seems much lighter as well and we are starting to get that 'spring is on its way' feeling. All went well with first lot and there was no need to resort to any explanations - thank goodness. Second lot of two year olds has all gone well and I am pleased to report that I am feeling a lot better after last week's flu/cold.

The Jockey Club notice on Warren Hill

I am delighted to see that the jockeys' half fee for non-runners has been abolished, which, as I stated at the time, was a completely barmy idea and I am pleased that most other people thought so too. The northern trainers were the most vocal with Richard Fahey leading the charge; it was pure common sense to change it but you wonder how it got through in the first place. There are so many other decisions made without proper thought or consultation, taken by people who have no real knowledge of the industry.

Walking home after cantering

Jockey Club racecourses have launched a loyalty scheme, which is called 'Rewards4Racing'. It is backed by 250 major retailers including Tesco and Sainsbury's and is very similar to the 'airmiles' scheme. It is quite an interesting idea and they must be commended on their initiative, so it will be interesting to see how it works. It, evidently, was the brainchild of Josh Apaifi, who used to work for the Jockeys' Association - Racing for Pennies has missed a good idea here. The simplicity of it is very good: basically, if you spend around £80 in any store, you get a free ticket to the races and you can also use your points for other experiences at the races i.e. going to the start, sitting in the commentary box, etc. I would think that if this takes off, which it should do, it will go nationwide with every racecourse signed up.

Barwick wakes up in the early morning

It is the AGM of the Newmarket Trainers' Federation today, which I have been the chairman of for many years now. It is always difficult to find the right time of year to hold this, so as many trainers as possible are able to attend. Nowadays with all-weather racing, the racing in Dubai and trying to fit in holidays, it is nearly impossible to get a full compliment but I am sure the ones that make it will have plenty to say on many subjects.
