The beautiful weather continues but there is a noticeable drop in the temperature today. The biting wind was quite a shock after the wonderful spring weather we have been having and, yet again, we seem to missed any of the rain. The grass is way too firm to be galloping the horses on, so we have been using the all-weathers, with first lot having a warm-up canter on Warren Hill, followed by a good second canter up Long Hill. The polytrack on Long Hill is 7 furlongs long and you are on the collar all the way, with the canter getting steeper the further you go. A canter up there is a good piece of work and we are spoilt, having all these facilities in Newmarket.

Richard Marriott, Conrad Lockey, Bryan Platts and David Tompkins with MHT

As you can see from the picture above, there have been plenty of visitors this morning and MHT has been busy training the horses and entertaining the owners. Everyone had picked a fantastic morning to come and see their horses and, as usual, they all seem to have enjoyed themselves. They are all off to the stud now to see the mares and foals.

Astroverdi (Ashley) and Cornish Quest (Hannah)

Everyone was disappointed this morning to read in the Racing Post that racing's charitable foundation is no longer in the running to take over the Tote. It seems like another missed opportunity and, although there is going to be some financial distribution back to racing, the chance of improving racing's finances through any future profits from the Tote, going back into prize money is now gone. I know when MHT is back in the office tomorrow, he will want to comment further on this but this loss will be sorely felt in the future.
