We had a few spots of rain on the stud at Dullingham last night but four miles away in the yard at Newmarket there had been none and we have just had about 25 spots during second lot. I know heavy showers are forecast for today and tomorrow but the clouds are high and the temperature is even higher, so I expect we will have to get lucky if we are to be the beneficiaries of an inch or two. Alan tells me that Garrowby, which is 15 minutes from York racecourse, had a couple of hours of good rain yesterday and they are calling the York  going good, good-to-firm in places at present. I am hopefully going to have a few runners next week, so any rain would be a big bonus.

A great meeting at Chester this week with St Nicholas Abbey being the highlight yesterday in the Ormonde Stakes. He looked very impressive there and if they can keep him right he will be a major player in all the mile and an half plus races this season. We have the Lingfield trials today, both for the Derby and the Oaks, followed by the important ones at York during the week. The classic picture will be much clearer by next weekend.

I see Arena Leisure have reported healthy figures, so I hope this means that their prize money pool will increase across their portfolio of tracks. They have lagged behind in this area and if only they would catch up, everybody would be delighted.

A very sad morning as Seve Ballesteros has passed away and a more iconic sportsman you would never find. He was a brilliant golfer, who was so individual and innovative, promoting his sport from the front with humour, humility and brilliance. He single-handedly put the Ryder Cup on the world map and will be a major loss to the whole golfing world.
A crunch time in the football this weekend, especially in the Premiership, where both top and bottom will start to take shape. The Owls are at home to Exeter and Arsenal are away to Stoke, who will be saving up for the Cup Final. I hope they play their reserves against the Gunners - so do I says Phil!
