I would like to say it is pouring down with rain and set in for the week but, once again, I can't and for about the eighth or ninth week running, we have had absolutely no rain. Thank goodness the investment and forethought into artificial tracks that Jockey Club Estates helped and developed over the years is now paying real dividends. We have such a number of them scattered throughout the town that everybody can benefit from them. We ourselves have had a canter up Warren Hill with all our lots this morning.

One runner today at Goodwood where the ground is on the good, good-to-firm side. Dazinski runs in the two mile handicap at 3.45 pm; he ran well there on his first run back this year and I think the extra two furlongs will be greatly in his favour. It is very difficult to find a race that is ideal for him, as his handicap mark makes him ineligible for so many races and he is not quite high enough to get into the top staying contests. This is where the programme needs plenty of attention and not to cater to the lowest standard of horses. Kieren Fallon rides him today and I must say he is riding brilliantly at the moment; I am sure, if he keeps clear of long bans, he will give Paul Hanagan a run for the jockey's championship. I don't know what price he is at the moment but he is certainly worth a look.

My comments on the Tote yesterday came a day early, as it is front page news today and also two full pages inside. As I said yesterday, I don't mind who gets it, as long as a decision is made and the winner gets on with sorting out this sleeping giant. It could, if run properly, produce real income for the industry, which would filter down to everybody involved.

A great article also on Michael Jarvis, who has had to retire for health reasons this year and is a great example to any aspiring young trainer, as to how to conduct oneself. The old adage of 'doing the job properly' is never more true.

I have had a request, from one of my owners, to mention the plight of Rushden and Diamonds Football Club, who only came into existence in 1992. They are about to die and if they cannot be sold by the end of the week, I think that will nearly be the end of them. I also think this applies to many clubs, as the financial side of football has just gone out of all proportion. So if you want a football club, you know where to go and I am sure they don't want much for it - just the debts! It would be much better to buy one of the three two year old colts I still have for sale, as they all worked really well yesterday morning on the watered gallop and got glowing references from jockey Neil Callan.
