“Do not light a fire that you cannot yourself put out.”

19-05-26First lot on Warren Hill

I don't have to tell you what the weather is like as anybody, who is not living in the north-west of Scotland or on a trawler in Icelandic waters, already knows there is not a cloud in the sky and no sign of one either. To cap it all one of our experienced lads, John, announced first lot that the end of May was going to be the hottest on record and certainly no rain for the next fortnight. I do hope he is wrong but somehow doubt it. Anyway, we have had a good morning so far, keeping the horses on the move with cantering and swimming. They all look pictures and are fit healthy and well when we do get chance to run them.

A funny race yesterday at Goodwood with one horse tearing off in front and looking like winning as it pleased, only for it to fall in a heap at the furlong pole, which galvanized the other jockeys into making an effort. We finished with a real flourish but all too late; he didn't have a hard race and will now go for a race at York during June.

Plenty of political chat in the Racing Post today re: the Tote, replacement of the Levy and BHA costs to name a few. The other headline was the BHA are to question Frankie Dettori about his tariff stand, where he was booked for a horse in a race below tariff and got off it, as he maintained quite rightly that he wouldn't ride in races below tariff. If every jockey did this, which would be greatly to their financial benefit, every race would very quickly come up to tariff. Well done Frankie, you have nothing to answer for and the BHA have made a political gaff out of this.

19-05-18Journalists on Warren Hill

We were inundated with the world's press this morning, who came to see the Queen's Derby favourite, Carlton House, go through his paces - a good idea to get them all out of the way in one fell swoop. I thought it might be a good chance to have a caption competition and the question is 'what do you call a group of journalists'. A Mark Tompkins pen to the winner, so you yourself can become a budding jourmnalist. E-mail your answers to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
