Advice is what we ask for when we already know the answer but wish we didn't.

It's very close this morning with high cloud, patches of sunshine and the breeze fluctuating on and off. David has just phoned me from Leicester racecourse to tell me it is absolutely throwing it down there and has been doing so for a while. Let's hope it really gets into the ground and that the rain is blowing in our direction, but somehow I think not. We have been cantering on Long Hill this morning and all has gone well.

One runner today at Leicester in the 5.35 we run Astromoon in the mile and a half apprentice handicap. Charles Eddery takes the ride as it is for apprentices that have not ridden more than 25 winners. The filly had a few little problems last year and consequently did not have much of a season. After a good break up at Garrowby, which did her a power of good, she is fit and ready for her first run of the year. She will improve tremendously for this but nevertheless I expect her to be thereabouts today.

I see from the Racing Post today that at long last a decision about the Tote is likely to be taken on Thursday. There seems to have been differences of opinion between the Treasury and the Department for Culture, Media and Sport as to who should get it. Both sides have had to produce further evidence of their intentions and just lets hope this saga will be over this week.

We have just been discussing the Derby on the Heath which is this coming Saturday. It's a good job that the Queen has the favourite and we have had a little bit of publicity in the general papers. If she hadn't, I think the most famous race in the world, the race that everybody wants to train, ride, and own the winner, would have got very little in way of headlines. What ought to have happened is that David Cameron should have called a Bank Holiday for this Wednesday, the race should have reverted to that day, and the whole of Great Britain would have been delighted - and the majority of them would have watched the race, as happens with the Melbourne Cup.

This is my final football comment until August - what a fantastic match we saw on Saturday night! Barcelona were dazzling and played football how it should be played - wouldn't it be good to watch such play at Hillsborough.
