Happiness depends upon ourselves.

Derby Day today and although it is warm,  there is quite a bit of cloud about and it is the first time for at least 6 weeks that there has been a proper dew. Steve and I got our feet really wet as we walked across Long Hill to see first lot canter. There is no rain forecast until the middle of next week so there will only be a few runners until then, although I have just declared two at Pontefract on Monday. Every horse looks absolutely marvellous in themselves with great coats on them.

We wish the Queen well today with her horse Carlton House in the Derby - and what a thrill she will get if Ryan Moore can manage to bring him home in front and into that hallowed winning enclosure. There is no better man to do it but he will have to steer the horse into a good position early from his outside draw. Maybe Fate will play a hand and the Queen can have an "Annus Mirabilis". She has been working so hard lately for the good of the country and this would be a very deserved victory.

It has been an interesting day or two in the courts for Kieren Fallon with the owners of a horse who he supposedly had contracted to ride, taking him to court because he had decided to ride for Aidan O'Brien. In the past this would have happened all the time as certain jockeys moved from horse to horse while they were making up their minds which was the best one, but I suppose the age we live in has encouraged this litigation to take place. Breaking News at 10.10 - We have just seen a headline stating that Kieren will not be allowed to ride in the Derby today after the owner appealed the first decision. This might open a real can of worms.

Another English Classic winner trained in Newmarket which so far is a clean sweep for the town. It just goes to show what fantastic facilities we have here and why if you want a horse trained to give it the best possible chance Newmarket is the place to be.

We rely on the hardworking people in the yard and they start as early as everyone else. In addition to their stable duties, they look after the yard cat, Squeak, as if she is royalty.
