Yet another dry day

Thursday, 09 June 2011

Nearly all men can stand adversity but if you want to test a man's character give him power.

Another dry morning and we are a bit thin on the ground with riders as we are sending horseboxes far and wide today, plus illnesses, funerals and holidays. So it is every man to the pump and they have all done well.

Everything has had a good canter or swim and we are getting organised for quite a few runners over the weekend.

The ground yesterday at Yarmouth had been well watered and was safe but fast . All three ran below par but there were mitigating circumstances about them all.
Four runners today - three at Yarmouth and one at Nottingham. Astroverdi makes his debut in the 4 0'clock at Nottingham. The ground will be on the fast side for him but the education will do him good and he will improve considerably for it. At Yarmouth we start off with Astromoon in the 2 mile handicap at 4.25. She badly needed her first run of the year at Leicester 10 days ago, and we will find out today if this trip is what she requires. Colzium goes in the next at 5 o'clock, again the ground will be on the fast side for him. He is a horse whom I have always liked being a big, strong, and good looking type. I am sure the trip will be O.K. and again this run will improve him. Cotton Grass completes our runners at 5.30. She has had three runs so far, her best being on her reappearance this year.  I expect her to get this trip well, it is just again the ground which is a guessing game at present. I won this race last year with Kathleen Francis and it would be good to do it again.

I was delighted to see the Jockey Club Annual report which said that they had increased their profits and that they were going to put another million and a half  extra into prize money at their courses. Attendances were up, and the whole group, which includes the Newmarket and Lambourn gallops, has done well. What a delight to see all the profits going back into racing rather than pay dividends to shareholders. Now the Tote has gone the Jockey Club is the only group within the industry which has our interests at heart. All the others are purely out for themselves.
