Perseveres with his heart,

And wins with his character."

A really mixed morning with one or two very heavy showers, along with bursts of bright sunshine; there is also a good breeze . Although we have had some good rain, it has not really got into the ground, as yet, on the training grounds and we have kept to the all-weathers for our cantering this morning. I hope some of you watched the Morning Line where the 'vicar of racing', Graham Locking, was being interviewed. I didn't actually see it but they did an interview with me last week and I hope that was on. Graham does so much good work for the industry.

Our two runners last night both ran well. Battery Power bumped into one and the first and second were 6 lengths clear of the third, which I do not think will not do our handicap any good. The two year old, My Guardian Angel, did a bit of shouting and got slightly upset beforehand but the pre-parade ring on the July Course is quite a daunting place to be, especially if it is dark and raining. He behaved well going to post, in the stalls and in the race and finished well. He will improve considerably for the night out, especially over a bit further.

Five runners today, four at Newmarket and one, tonight, at Haydock. At Newmarket, in the 1.35 pm race, we run Astroverdi, who was very slowly away and took very little interest at Nottingham on his debut. We have been working with him in the stalls and are hopeful of him being more competitive today. He has shown ability at home and maybe more experience or a little bit further will bring it out of him. Imjin River, who runs in the 2.35 pm race, was very disappointing at Sandown two weeks ago and it will be interesting to see if there is any improvement today - let's hope there is. In the 4.15 pm race, we run Rayvin Black, who is a half brother to four winners; he will gain plenty of experience today from this outing, in what looks a competitive maiden with plenty of big stables involved. In the last race, we run one of the stable favourites, Locum, who is well-handicapped now and if he can be switched off and relaxed early on, he would not be without a chance of making the frame today. Tonight we run Zenarinda in the 8.45 pm race at Haydock, where the ground varies from good-to-firm to good-to-soft. I have commented on this before and it is completely crazy but, once these course designers start to dig up the track and re-lay it, this is the result. As Peter Walwyn once said 'they should be put on a bus'and pushed off the nearest cliff. She ran well at Chester without any luck in running a week ago and would certainly have a chance tonight. The danger would be Miss Blink, who is the first foal of Tawny Way, who we have at Dullingham Park for Mr and Mrs Reed.

On Sunday, we have four runners at Pontefract. Koraleva Tectona is the first of them in the 3.10 pm race, the fillies' mile handicap. She was never at the races at Yarmouth last time and I am hoping this further trip might bring some improvement.Ted Spread makes his re-appearance in the 4.10 pm race, the mile and an half listed race; he has been cut since last year, had a good break at Garrowby and has been moving well in his work this spring. Any further rain would greatly help things but I expect him to run with credit. In the next,  the two mile two furlong handicap, we run Dazinski, who has been running well all year and has always given me the impession that he will stay this further distance. Star Commander completes our quartet in the 5.10 pm race and, although this looks reasonably competitive, the trip will suit and more rain would obviously help; he is not without a chance.

Kevin Darley was back at Ascot yesterday - thank goodness - and his knowledge and expertise on the flat game were just what was required. Some of the commenters ask inane questions and have very little knowledge of the inside of the game but with Kevin you get the correct result, so along with Willie Carson you can nearly guarantee they are talking on the right wavelength. Clare Balding has been brilliant all week and why the BBC doesn't do more racing is beyond me.

The great tipping reaches its crescendo today with the last day of Royal Ascot and a glance at the totals makes very happy reading. It guarantees I will be plus after the whole week but I am not crowing yet, as a big price winner would win it. Sam has been learning his lesson all week and Phil tells me that he had a great-uncle Bob, who used to pick winners and take hours over it with form books and daily papers spread out on the table. He used to put a wet, cold towel around his head with the theory that it stopped his brain from over-heating and this is a true story. I hope Sam has taken note of his great-uncle Bob's belief.

Royal Ascot tipping competition - Day 5

After 4 day's racing, Mark has come with a late run after a 16-1 winner yesterday, to be plus £83 with Phil, close behind on £41.74. Sam is still in contention on minus £134.50 but will need a good-priced winner today.
