We had a good drop of rain through the night, which has stopped now but it looks like we shall get some more before the morning is over. The horses have been cantering up Warren Hill polytrack with some having one canter and a pick of grass, some having two and I have had some of the two year olds doing a bit of work upsides as well. So, all-in-all, a busy morning with the horses plus plenty of owners arriving at breakfast time to see their horses out third lot.

We have two runners today, one at Newmarket and one at Newcastle. Like Clockwork makes his debut in the 1.45 pm race at Newmarket, the 7 furlong maiden. He is a half-brother to Zenarinda and Barwick by Rail Link and is a horse that I have always liked. Typical of that family, he has done nothing but improve all year and he will continue to develop right through into next year. This looks a typically competitive Newmarket maiden with plenty of well bred individuals but Like Clockwork will appreciate the overnight rain and I would expect him to run an encouraging race with plenty of promise for the future.
Mystery Star runs in the Northumberland Plate at 3.05 pm this afternoon. The ground is softer than I would have liked up there, which is not ideal but he ran such a marvellous race in the Chester Cup and he seems in great form at the moment that we shall keep our fingers crossed that he gets some luck in running and copes with the ground.

25-06-23Cat Island (Nikki) and Astrolibra (Jemma)

The horses all ran well yesterday without hitting the mark. Astrovenus ran a good race, coming there with every chance before getting a bit tired on her first run back for a while. Astroleo finished third, beaten less than 2 lengths and ran another solid race. Unfortunately, Charles Eddery got stuck in traffic on the way down there and Chris Catlin had to take the ride; the 7 lbs that Charles would have taken off could have made all the difference.
At Newmarket in the evening, Marvo got the evening off to a good start, again running a really encouraging race on his first start for a long time. Dine Out ran respectably in what looked a very good maiden and is going the right way. Finally, Piccarello ran a much better race than last time at Windsor on ground that was probably still a bit too firm for him.
