"The way I see it, if you want the rainbow, you gotta put up with the rain.”

Another warm day and very muggy but, as the morning has progressed, it is getting cooler - thank goodness. No real rain has occured yet, even though the forecasters put out a weather warning for East Anglia with warnings of 2 inches of rain, thunderstorms, typhoons and even tornadoes. All we have had is b..... hot weather and  six drops of rain!
Newmarket has been gridlocked this morning, as the A14 had a lorry fire on it and all traffic was being diverted through the town. Phil, who only lives a mile and an half away, took an hour and twenty minutes to get in. With the increase in traffic nowadays,  just think what it would have been like before the bypass and the Council still want Hatchfield Farm - it is beyond belief but I suppose all the councillors live elsewhere.

We have been on the watered gallop with the first two lots, which is in great shape with plenty of grass and a perfect galloping surface. I have said it before and I will say it again: if only the racecourses could be like this. Our runner yesterday blatantly didn't stay the trip when given a positive ride by Kieren, so a drop in distance and grade will be on the agenda next.

Three runners today at Hamilton, where the ground is just on the soft side of good. Shomberg runs in the first, the 6 furlong two year old maiden; he is a big, strong, scopey type, who will be better for the run but I am sure he will run okay today. Cat Island was disappointing last time over 6 furlongs, so this trip will be more to her liking and she could get involved at a big price today. The same comments apply to Colzium in the mile and an half handicap at 4.15 pm, who ran better than his finishing position at Yarmouth last time, as he still ran very green there and looks at everything around him. I hope Nicky MacKay can concentrate his mind today, as it will improve him no end, not only for today but also the future.

I don't often agree with the William Hill boss, Ralph Topping but in the article on page 2 of today's Racing Post where he is talking about Betfred's stance over the Barney Curley coup, he says that it is not just a slippery slope but positively precipitous - this is about the bookmaker, who the Government has just sold the Tote to. You honestly could't make it up. It is frightening what is happening at the moment. Where is anybody who can lead us?
