July Cup day....

“Give every man thine ear, but few thy voice; Take each man's censure, but reserve thy judgment.”

A breezy morning once again, which will be drying up the track here at Newmarket, after the sharp showers we have had over the last couple of days. As I said earlier in the week, it has been very quiet in town, even with the sales and the top class racing we have had at the July festival. I think the crowds were down yesterday and  it will be very interesting to see what happens today with the July Cup being run on  a Saturday for the first time.

A bit disappointing yesterday. The ground went against Dazinski, Kathleen Frances did not get home (I will be trying her back at a mile and a quarter next time) and Cornish Beau did not get a clear run on the inside at Newbury and is another that may not have stayed.

A fantastic feast of racing for everyone today with Newmarket staging the July Cup and the ever-competitive Bunbury Cup, whilst up at York we have the John Smith's Cup. As we keep saying, it is ridiculous having so much racing on a Saturday, a point which Richard Hughes makes very clearly in his excellent article in the Racing Post today but this afternoon all we can do is sit down and enjoy it.
