"Don't go through life, grow through life."

A glorious morning with bright, blue sky, no wind and plenty of sunshine, making it a perfect temperature to work in, once again. A good compliment of staff, who are all working well plus the horses, who are really thriving, have had a good exercise and everyone is enthusiastic. They are all looking really well and let's hope we can keep them well coated as they go into the autumn.

Three runners today, one this afternoon at Salisbury and two tonight at Kempton. We run Mystery Star in the 5.30 pm race at Salisbury, the mile and six furlong condition race. The ground will be okay for him but one or two of these are more highly rated on official figures, nevertheless I think the track will suit and he certainly has a chance of being there or thereabouts. Tonight at Kempton, we run Imjin River in the 7.10 pm race. He is much better drawn than last week and I would expect him not to be too far away tonight. Kieren Fallon rides and the blinkers, which helped him last time, are fitted again. In the 9.10 pm race, when everybody will have gone home, Comrade Bond runs, again with Kieren riding. This time he is not drawn very well but the form of his races has been working out very well and he shouldn't be far away tonight.

I see the bookmakers are now in unison about quantity not quality being the key to success (page 5 of the Racing Post) but to quote a quote, "They would say that wouldn't they". All the bookmakers want is the punter to bet on poor, low grade racing, which suits them, as results are so up and down and form goes out the window at regular intervals. We must have more professional punters at present than at any time in history with the sit-behind-the-computer gambler now becoming a profession and don't forget most of this gambling is done with the offshore bookmakers, so doesn't raise any levy. This country needs quality racing, which attracts the big owners and gives everybody a chance of having a good horse; if we keep downgrading it like we are, we will become just like the greyhound industry - on their uppers. The time has come for everybody to stand together and get this mess sorted out, once and for all. I just wish the bookmakers would make a real effort to work with us rather than purely for their own interests; their idea may work in the short term but won't stand the test of time.
