Overcast but still mild.......

An overcast morning but still mild, which helps the working environment. I was intrigued to see plenty of red sky this morning, as I drove from Dullingham and as the saying goes, "Red sky in the morning, shepherds warning", so we may be in for a storm in the next few days. We have a few runners today at different meetings and with holidays and illnesses plus 'non-turneruppers' we have got a very basic staff but I have co-opted Mo and Alison from the stud, who are doing a great job with the boxes. I have always said we have a fantastic team and you really find out who the stars are on days like this.

Five runners today, one at Ascot, two at Thirsk and two at Kempton. Starting at Ascot, we run Lady Bellatrix in the fillies' condition race at 2.40 pm. I have thrown her in the deep end a little bit but feel she will run with credit and Michael Hills has always been a very lucky jockey for me. He doesn't ride often for me because of his other commitments but Steenberg in the Duke of York, Group 2, and Topatoo in the Middleton Stakes, Group 3, are two races he has won for us that spring to mind. Lady Bellatrix is a really nice filly with a future ahead of her, who will continue to develop right into next year.

At Thirsk, if the ground is what they say it is, I will run both Marvo and Kathleen Frances. My travelling lad, David, will walk the course and report back, as I don't want what happened at Salisbury this week to occur again. Marvo runs in the 3.30 pm race, the mile handicap, where he is drawn okay and I would expect him to get involved at the business end. Kathleen Frances, who runs in the 4.00 pm race, has had very little chance the last twice with the ground and distance being against her but today's trip will suit and if the ground has got any give in it she will run well.

At Kempton we run Brushing in the September Stakes, Group 3, where she is well drawn and if she handles this surface, which she is experiencing for the first time, she could surprise a few of these. There will be plenty of pace, which will suit and I am hoping for a good run. Star Commander completes our nap hand in the mile and an half race at 4.55 pm. He is a course and distance winner but the handicapper has not been too kind to us with his latest assessment, nevertheless, he is not without hope here.

The second round of weaning started at the stud yesterday and David reported this morning that all had gone like clockwork. Let's hope this group does as well as the last, who are now in clover up at Garrowby.
