Wet and windy.....

"To attract good fortune, spend a new coin on an old friend, share an old pleasure with a new friend and lift up the heart of a true friend by writing his name on the wings of a dragon."

A very wet and windy morning, which seems to be leaving us in no doubt that summer is over. As we are having no runners before the weekend, I have not been galloping any of the horses this morning but we have been cantering on Warren and Long Hills, giving the horses a good, healthy exercise.

I have been scoping quite a few of the horses this morning, as they come back in from exercise. This involves the vet placing an endoscope into the trachea of the horse, so that he can see whether there is any mucous there or not. It is best to do it straight after exercise, as the effort of cantering pushes any discharge up from the lungs into the trachea; the vet can then take a wash and the resultant discharge can be analysed for the presence of any bacteria. The horses are very accepting of the whole process and it is an invaluable tool in evaluating the health of each horse.

The St. Leger is shaping up to be fascinating contest on Saturday. Godolphin have given Blue Bunting the go ahead in her quest to win the final classic and, as Simon Crisford points out, the 3 lbs that she is getting from the colts could be critical. Aiden O'Brien is represented by Wonder of Wonders, who won the Cheshire Oaks earlier in the year, but she looks to be held by Blue Bunting on her form in the Yorkshire Oaks. Michael Stoute's representative, Sea Moon, looks the biggest danger on his run in the Great Voltigeur, particularly as he could still be improving.
The St. Leger is a race that I hold in great affection, bringing back memories of Bob's Return's victory and I am delighted that this year's renewal looks like being such a competitive race.
