A very dark and overcast morning with a chilly wind and spots of rain in the air. The horses have been having, either one or two canters on Warren Hill polytrack, as per usual on a Thursday morning and I was pleased with the way they all moved.

I see in the Racing Post that the issue of a reduction in fixtures is causing concern, particularly with the racecourses, bookmakers and the Levy Board. It seems to be fairly obvious that if there is less money to go round, due to a smaller Levy, then the pot amongst which it must be shared needs to be reduced as well. What seems to be unfair is that Ffos Las is being asked to lose a disproportionate amount of its fixtures, possibly rendering it financially unviable. A much fairer solution would be for the racecourses, who cannot meet the tariff or who need to downgrade their races in order to meet it, to lose a higher percentage of their fixtures. The racecourses, who put on attractive racing with good prize money, should be encouraged and those that do not should be allowed to fall by the wayside.

It looks as if Paul Bittar, a protege of Greg Nichols, who is chief strategy officer for Racing Victoria at present, looks to be the frontrunner to take over as the new chief executive of the BHA. Let's hope whoever takes on this role is able to bring a greater sense of direction and purpose than has been present so far.
