A much nicer morning today, although we have still had no rain but there is quite a bit forecast. Plenty of visitors throughout the morning, who are enjoying the spectacle of Newmarket; it is such a fabulous place to visit for the first time with the strings of racehorses, cantering everywhere. There is so much to see whether it be horses, trainers or jockeys, plus getting plenty of fresh air and having a good walk. We have been cantering on Warren Hill followed by a pick of grass and everything has gone very smoothly so far.

I see the BHA are banning more people from being involved in our sport, who have been laying horses and other such wheezes on the exchanges. I have constantly banged on about this as, once the exchanges started, it was a licence for the rogues to get going. The integrity department of the BHA has a massive budget, which they are trying to justify but, once you can have a bet on a horse to lose, these people will find a way of doing it.

Some big meetings today but to me the most important is up at Ayr. The annual cavalry charge of the Ayr Gold Cup at 3.20 is not as good as it used to be with all the southern-based jockeys having to miss the meeting, due to Newmarket and Newbury being on the same day. It is usually a pin job and the draw plays a major part but after watching yesterday's racing I don't think there is much to choose between the two sides. Phil thinks Pepper Lane will run a big race and I am going to put up Mayson as an alternative, although I also like Pastoral Player. Good luck to everbody and, as usual, there will be a great atmosphere; it is only a pity I haven't had any runners there.
