A very warm day....

"A man who dares to waste one hour of time has not discovered the value of life."

A warm night and with clear, blue skies this morning, it feels as hot a day as we have had all year, which is ridiculous for nearly October. The horses have been cantering on both Warren and Long Hills this morning where, even first lot, virtually nobody had a sheet on their horses, in an attempt to stop them sweating too much. It is important to keep the horses well-hydrated on days like this and to make sure they have plenty of fresh, clean water when they get back home.

I have had to pull Battery Power out of her race at Wolverhampton today, as when I took a precautionary blood off her, it did not come back 100%. She seems fine in herself and it is frustrating not to be able to run her, as she is 3 lbs better off today than she will be in future but she is too nice a filly to be taking a chance.

There is an excellent article on page 6 of the Racing Post today about Cirrus des Aigles, whose career I have followed, as he is the best horse to be sired by Even Top. I have very fond memories of Even Top and shall never forget his run in the 2000 Guineas, where he was just beaten a short head by Mark of Esteem. Corine Barande-Barbe has done a fantastic job with this horse, winning twelve races with him and over £800,000 in prize money; he has kept improving throughout his career and is better than ever now as a five year old. The intention is for him to run next in the Champion Stakes at Ascot and I, for one, shall be shouting him home on that day.

I see also in the Racing Post that Paddy Power have won their appeal to open a shop in the high street. Whilst I have nothing against Paddy Power, it does seem ludicrous to allow another betting shop in the town centre when we already have eleven. Surely we should be encouraging a retailer to open in the high street, who will breathe some life into the community and give people a reason to come into town to shop.
