A much cooler and breezier morning, especially out on Warren Hill where we have been this morning. You can be caught out and we often are, as the yard is very sheltered and you only need a sweater but once out on the Heath with no protection, a coat is needed. After yesterday's work morning we have been having an easy day, although I have done two good canters with the two year olds that have been on the backward side. There will be no runners now until Saturday and then only a few, as we have still had no rain and none is really forecast until after the weekend. It has actually been an amazing autumn, unlike any I have ever known and I am sure we will be in for a deluge when it will never stop - maybe four days before Champions Day at Ascot!

I see the jockeys are now starting to voice their concerns about the new whip rule changes and are worried that some horses will not win if they are not encouraged enough. Personally I think we have got it about right and jockeys will have to learn to ride, using more strength and tactical guile, before going for the whip. This whole matter would not have got this far if the powers-that-be had had the strength of character to sort it out earlier. I say let's give it a go and see what happens but we definitely don't want whipless races and no more reductions in numbers need happen again.

Talking about jockeys, the jockeys' championship is starting to get exciting once again and I implore the Racing Post to start having the position daily on the front page, not on page 13. This is a great chance to promote racing with three consummate professionals, going all out for the title with just over a month to run. What a chance to get everybody involved in what could be a fantastic climax, similar to the Seb Sanders/Jamie Spencer title decider on the last day a couple of years ago. I will be helping out all parties with my runners.

The sales start today at 11.30 with an international cast of purchasers and, although this week is sometimes not a great barometer for the climate, it will give us an indication of how things are. I think it will be difficult for domestic owners and trainers to get heavily involved but there will be plenty of bargains and good value if you put in the work.
