A bright moon first thing....

A clear blue sky with the moon peering down over Newmarket first lot. There was no wind and with the cobwebs beginning to show up like fishermen's nets you start to get the idea that autumn is really upon us. It feels as if the temperature has dropped dramatically this morning and we have all needed our heavy coats on and the horses have been wearing their warm exercise sheets. We have been having our normal canters up Warren and Long Hills with everything seemingly going well.

Our two runners yesterday both ran with promise. I was a bit hard on Cornish Beau, throwing him in the deep end at Cheltenham first time over hurdles but he jumped well and will improve dramatically for this first run. Astrolibra delighted me with her run to finish fourth, jumping immaculately and getting a good ride from the up-and-coming Peter Carberry. She will certainly go on and win one or two handicaps at more provincial tracks but I think a novice chase campaign would be an even better plan.

Two runners today, one at Ascot with Brushing running in the Fillies and Mares race at this inaugural Champions Day meeting. We are more hopeful than confident but she was found to be wrong in her blood after her last run at Newmarket and it looked much better last night, so I am hopeful that we can collect some of the good prize money on offer this afternoon. It is a great day's racing, which has not had the publicity or the build-up it should have had or its sponsors would have expected, due to the furore over other issues.
Locum runs tonight at Wolverhampton in the 6.30 pm race with George Baker taking the mount. He has run well at this track before and if putting his best foot forward, he could reward his faithful followers. I must say I have never seen him look better in himself than he does at present.

As we do this site Wales have yet to run out onto the pitch in New Zealand and I never thought I would hear myself say this as an Englishman but "Come on Wales, get to the World Cup rugby final".
