Another damp morning from the dew and the mist but it is still remarkably mild for this time of year. The ground yesterday at Newmarket was very much on the good-to-firm side and still will be today, as no rain fell yesterday or this morning. In fact, it was a very nice day at the races yesterday with a reasonable crowd and for once a little bit of atmosphere on the Rowley Mile. However, I would put that more down to the good weather, as we are usually at this time of year wrapped up in coats and the ground is soft. After yesterday's schooling morning, we have been cantering round Side Hill and I cannot wait for the clocks to go back to make it lighter first thing.

Our runners yesterday performed as I thought. Astrolibra was a bit unlucky when not being able to get a clear run from a poor position but finished very well; she will be going novice chasing next. Chankillo will improve considerably for his experience. Kathleen Frances purely hated the ground and all her good form has been on very soft ground and Blimey O'Riley's race may have come a bit too quick for him.

Today we have two runners. Astrogold runs in the first at Newmarket at 1.00 pm. This outing will do her the power of good, as she is a big filly by Motivator and is a really nice three year old in the making. At Wetherby, we run Smokey Oakey in the 4.00 pm race, who has to carry a penalty for his win at Aintree. Nevertheless, he jumps very well and I expect him to put up a bold show today against some younger rivals. He has been a great servant to the yard and is not finished by a long way yet.
