A mild and cloudy morning

A very mild morning and the forecasters tell us it is going to stay way above the average temperature for this time of year all week although we may get a bit of rain - too late for the racing but it will help the ground on the stud.
A good couple of lots out already and because of the clocks going back much lighter and safer for everybody concerned. It is complete madness to support the politicians who are calling for European time as it would never get light and accidents would increase tenfold.

One runner today at Wolverhampton which, for a change, is in the afternoon thankgoodness. Locum runs in the 2.50p.m. the mile and six handicap. It is one of the two races which complies with tarriff there today and everyone  seems to have forgotten what the tarriffs were all about.
Locum was very unlucky here last time when he finished third. He has been a model of consistency all year and deserves to get his head in front today - and I don't think he will be far off doing so.

It is the Melbourne Cup tomorrow morning live on At the Races at 4 am so you will need to set your alarms or not go to bed at all. It's a race that not only stops Australia but New Zealand as well and most of the Southern Hemisphere. There is a big European entry with Moden being my choice of our participants. A great big strong horse, I saw him win at Kempton for Sir Michael Stoute before being sold to Godolphin for the specific purpose of running in this race. It would be great for the Europeans to win it again. We had a fantastic experience when Franklin's Gardens ran in the Cup a few years ago, and would recommend that everybody try to be there to witness it sometime in their lives.
