Smokey Oakey - the luckiest horse in Newmarket - after exercise

The first real overnight frost of the year last night but no wind so the chill factor didn't come into play this morning. We had a good exercise with a canter up the Al Bahathri at first lot with the horses and lads in good form. Our yearlings continue to progress and, with Steve having his annual holiday, David has taken over the mantle of chief yearling overseer. They continue to learn new things daily. Iain set off to Garrowby at first light with a couple of foals, and he will be bringing four horses out of training back from their holidays. This will continue up to Christmas when we shall have everything back here.

Everyone at Flint Cottage is highly delighted for Mattie Batchelor winning the Hennessey as he is a constant visitor, along with his colleague Colin Bolger, to school here at Newmarket for us. He is a great character and enthusiast. It was a courageous performance by Carruthers and a marvellous achievement for all the members of the Oaksey family. We send Mattie many congratulations from all at Newmarket.
Astrolibra didn't jump as well as she can do on Sunday and maybe it was going that way round or maybe she just had an off day. She did beat the favourite though, and I shall be checking her over before giving her another run on a left handed track before Christmas.

All of us here would like to wish Jenko a speedy recovery from his operation. He runs the syndicates so brilliantly for us and has been involved at Flint Cottage since time immemorial as an owner, an amateur jockey and a loyal friend.  The only good outcome of this will be that he will have to change his golf stance which may give Conrad a bit of a chance.

I took Angie to Hillsborough on Saturday to watch the Owls play Leyton Orient. We were very kindly invited and had a wonderful day seeing behind the scenes and meeting such generous hosts. The Owls won again to keep up the pressure at the top and now I have a converted wife at long last.
