Cantering up the ploytrack

Joe the Coat (Rhea) keeping warm in the school

A clear morning which meant that as the light came up a frost came down and, if you were standing still like I was with Conrad Lockey watching the horses in the ride at first lot, you really felt the chill. All the riders and horses are sheltered by the roof so they were as warm as toast especially when trotting for miles. It became a cracking morning and at second lot I managed to get some good fast work into the jumpers and all-weather horses. I am absolutely delighted with the horses this year and cannot wait for the season to start.

I see the bookies are wanting racing on the two days before Christmas. Why not Christmas Day? Keep everybody working and the benefit going to the bookmaking chains. Thank goodness it looks as if the BHA are on our side and I hope common sense will prevail. We race on every other day -  Sundays and bank holidays all through the year the only exception being Good Friday. The staff are constantly flat out and we are running for very poor prize money so the benefits are very small to the horsemen, but for the bookies their profits continue to rise. There has been an increase in attendances after Christmas, which is as it should be with great horses and racing to see at both Kempton and Cheltenham, but please let the staff have a few days off especially at this time of year.

Coming home

It's the last day to enter Phil's quiz. We have had a great response this year and I shall be announcing the winner early next week. If anybody has any other ideas re competitions please put them forward. You will find the quiz on the Christmas Daily News page which is now in the December Archive.
