Daffodils at the stud

"Courage is resistance to fear, mastery of fear - not absence of fear."

It's an amazingly glorious morning for this time of year, here we are January 10th and you could ride out in just a sweater. On the stud we have some daffodils out with flower buds waiting to open. I'm sure we may well pay for it as the winter goes on, but I have been saying that all summer and we have still have had no proper rain. We have had horses at all sorts of places this morning - in the indoor school, on Bury Side and up at the Links.

If anybody has not read the book, Warhorse, or seen the play, they have the chance to go and see the film at the end of the week. In fact a couple of our jockeys are involved in it - both Mattie Batchelor and Colin Bolger were extras along with a few of their colleagues in many of the riding scenes. It really is a fantastic story and although I have not yet seen the film, I am sure it will be an epic. Another great book to read on the same subject is "Warrior", which is the true story of a horse throughout the First World War. These both demonstrate the intense closeness which is formed between humans and horses.

The two year olds are progressing very well indeed and look marvellous. They are totally used to the routine now and go out like old horses. We have got several sharp types, especially the fillies, and I might amaze myself by having some early two year old runners.

The Heath is run on a day to day basis by Nick Patten, pictured below. He joined the Jockey Club Estates from Market Rasen racecourse where he had been their chief factotum. He has brought new enthusiasm and ideas to the heathmen and is a great new addition at Newmarket.
