"No snowflake in an avalanche ever feels responsible."

Second lot at the top of Long Hill - lead by Eanans Bay

It’s an overcast morning but not too cold. We have had a full complement of staff, plus a few outsiders, to ride out and good conditioning canters have been the order of the morning once again. Colin Bolger came early on his way to Southwell and gave Smokey Oakey a pop over the brush hurdles on the all weather surface at The Links. He really is a good jumper and absolutely loves to get his feet off the ground.

The two runners yesterday both went well. I think we should have had a winner in the first but once again things didn’t fall quite right for us. Chankillo finished with a rattle and we will now leave him until the turf season. Cotton Grass certainly stays the two miles and I think that, although it was a small field, plenty of winners will come out of the race. I was delighted with her effort and there are wins to be had with Cotton Grass under both codes.

The National Trainers’ Federation is meeting in London today. I hear a very poor attendance is anticipated and I think many of our members, of which there are nearly 600, are either too busy working in order to survive or are getting apathetic about what the powers that be are doing to help the industry. I shall be going to give moral support and have always been of the opinion that you should make the effort to attend such meetings. You can always learn something, and can never say you did not have the chance to air your views.
