A good fast work morning

It’s been a busy morning once again with both the first two lots doing fast work. We were slightly delayed with the first lot as Eddie Ahern said his alarm failed to go off. A good bucket of cold water would have done the trick better. However, things improved as the morning went on and everybody and everything did very well. The horses are progressing with each piece of work and will be fit and raring to go when we get some rain on the grass tracks.

A bit disappointing yesterday at Wolverhampton with Zenarinda but the race was not run to suit. From her outside draw she would never settle, and pulled much too hard for too long. It’s like running with the choke out all the time. There will be other days for her, and don’t give up on her yet.

Very sad to see the death of Montjeu announced today. He had been a tremendous racehorse and was a high class sire. The sire of several Derby winners and an Arc winner he was a very sought-after stallion whose colts and fillies sold equally well. His fillies are also making their mark as very good brood mares. His sons at stud include Authorized and Motivator along with Pour Moi, last year's Derby winner. I hope one of these three may step up to his mantle. He will be a huge loss to the European breeding industry.

An interesting article on the Godolphin stable in the Racing Post today, with details of some of their horses to run this season. It must be absolutely amazing to train a stable full of these top class horses. We are very lucky in England that Sheikh Mohammed loves to race his horses here and makes the town his main base. The stables and facilities seem to be growing every year and Newmarket is delighted and very grateful to have him and his family.
