A bit overcast but with very high clouds, so not much rain as yet, although the weather forecasters all promise us some - let us hope they are right. Our normal Saturday morning, a nice easy canter and a pick of grass with first lot; I did a bit more second lot, especially with some of the two year olds, who are coming on in leaps and bounds.

Astrodonna and Zenarinda

A lot of talk about the Derby, I am told, on the Morning Line. I never get time to watch it, as we are always too busy but several phone messages have told me that the picture of who is going to run or not is still very muddled; all we want is the ground to be at least good and to have a clear run through next week. Ted Spread will be plated (have his racing shoes fitted) on Wednesday and have a pipe-opener (clear his wind) on Thursday and he will travel down on the morning of the race.

Smokey Oakey leads four two year olds a good second canter

We have one runner today, Dazinski at Haydock; Ian has just phoned to say it is pouring down there, which in my opinion, he does not like and it is quite amazing, whenever I try to run him it buckets down. This is a very competitive contest and, I am hoping, he can continue on his upward curve and run a big race but my one caution is soft ground.

Alex Campbell at his day job

You will have heard the Guv'nor going on about the 'ambulance driver' Alex, who rides out on his days off from his, so-called, day job. Above is him in action, sitting on Warren Hill, having a bacon sandwich and a cup of coffee. The sight of the ambulance made everyone hold on to their neckstraps even tighter, in fear and trepidation of being given the kiss of life by the above.
