Horse welfare is paramount ...

Hopefully April will bring some showers

“When it is obvious that the goals cannot be reached, don’t adjust the goals, adjust the action steps.”

An overcast morning once again, and the temperature has certainly dropped from what we have been getting used to over the past month. If the forecast is to be believed we may be lucky enough to get a few showers this week. Let’s hope that the old adage of “April showers” comes true during the month. We have been cantering with the whole string on Bury Side this morning and so far everything has gone as planned.

It was a great feast of racing on Saturday, with the highlight for us being the great victory of Cirrus Des Aigles in The Classic. He is by Even Top who was such a fantastic horse for us a few years ago, and has now sadly died before he could really prove his worth at stud. He started off at stud in Ireland before moving to France, and this horse is by far and away the best one he has produced from only small crops. Even Top was bought at Goffs in Ireland by me as a yearling for around £20,000 and was a high class colt. He was beaten a short head in the 2000 Guineas by Mark Of Esteem. It took ages for the photo to be announced and many people thought we had won. Philip Robinson gave him a tremendous ride and it was only by a whisker that the result went against us. He ran many good races after that and gave us so much pleasure. He ran in the second Dubai World Cup and finished seventh from a bad draw. It was so exciting back then to be involved with the start and development of Dubai and its racing. A lot has changed over there since then, with the new racecourse being built at Meydan, but if you have the right horse it must be worth a crack for the prize money is unbelievable.

I hope you all watched the Owls win 2-0 on Saturday before turning over for the racing. We are still in contention for a promotion spot, and look guaranteed to be at least in the play-offs. The office is pretty quiet this morning, with Phil and Ian not saying much, but a few mutterings about their defensive mid-field have been heard. I wish I was in the same position of supporting a teamy third in the Premier League, rather than the First Division!
