The turf season is just around the corner ...

A gentle work morning on the grass

“When one door closes, another door opens; but we so often look so long and regretfully upon the closed door, that we do not see the ones which open for us.”
Alexander Graham Bell.

It is another overcast morning, but as yet there has been no rain. After a pretty hectic day yesterday we have been just doing one canter on Warren Hill grass and giving them a pick of grass out of the wind, or trying to get out of the wind at least. With Newmarket racing on today there will no doubt be a few visitors, as people tend to call in and see their horses on their way to the races.

We have three runners today, two at Chester and one at Doncaster. Kathleen Frances is our first runner at 2:00 in the mile and a half handicap. She has run two sound races this season and it looks as though she is nearly ready to strike. Any more rain would suit her, and she should run well. Our other runner is in the last at 5:25. Zenarinda, who has run well here twice before, takes her chance in this mile and a quarter fillies’ handicap. I have claimed 5lbs off her back and hope she puts up a good show once again. She has been placed so many times and certainly deserves to get her head in front this season.

Our other runner is Battery Power at Doncaster in the 4:55 – another mile and a half handicap. She ran a marvellous race first time out this year to be second, and there was a slightly disappointing result – on ground which was far too firm for her – last time at Haydock. Back on a soft surface today I think we will see her in a much better light.

Thank you to everybody who has sent me messages after we trained our 1,000th winner this week. It is always very nice to receive them but, as I say, I couldn’t do it without the backing of the staff and especially my owners who have been a great support over the years. We are now moving on to the next 1,000.
