A quiet day after yesterday's mixed workout

“Action may not always bring happiness, but there is no happiness without action. ”
William James.

It is Armed Forces Day today and it’s being supported across the UK and the wider world. If you want to show your support for all the lads in the services whether they be at home or away click on the link below.

Once again it’s a sunshine and showers type of day and there is quite a bit of breeze about. All the horses have had a quietish morning after what has been a busy week for a lot of them. Both my travelling lads will be delighted to have a Sunday off which hopefully will let them recharge their batteries.

Eanans Bay bringing up Jennifer J

Jennifer J runs at Pontefract on Monday

Old Boy Ted ran a sound race at Musselburgh yesterday. He found only one too good in what was very heavy ground and the times of the races bore that out. He is improving as he strengthens into his frame and I don’t think it will be long before he is in the winner’s enclosure. Astrosapphire would have learned tons from her experience here at Newmarket. She behaved impeccably and had a good blow afterwards, and once we step her up in trip she should be winning. The only slight disappointment was My Guardian Angel at Chester who could never get any cover and took the viaduct route most of the way. He has been on an upward curve and I am sure he will soon be winning again on a different track.

Toptempo led by Marvo

We have five runners today starting with three at Chester this afternoon. Rayvin Black goes first in the mile-and-a-half  race at 2.40. He ran very well at York and I am hoping he won’t be very far off today. Zenarinda goes in 4.50, the mile-and-a-quarter claimer. She has run well here at this track before and with a bit of luck should make the frame. Finally, in the 5.25, we run Kathleen Frances. Second here two runs ago, she must be in the shake-up once again.

Tonight at Lingfield we run Locum in the 8.00. Darryll takes the rides on both of ours this evening and if he can get some cover for most of the way I’m hoping Locum can be in the shake-up here. Astroscarlet is our last runner at 8.30. She is terribly drawn at 14, but was also badly drawn last time and Darryll managed to win the race easily. This looks a much better contest, though, and it will be interesting to see how she can perform having been raised nine pounds by the handicapper.

Five Hearts is entered at Brighton on Tuesday and Yarmouth on Thursday

On Friday Blimey O'Riley is entered at Sandown and Dine Out at Warwick

It’s amazing that Newcastle have managed to get the Plate meeting on. It is their biggest money-spinner of the year and people will have been planning to go since last year. It will be very hard on the horses in such heavy ground and I would have cancelled the whole meeting and rescheduled it. If you have got to have a bet today make sure your horse likes it soft!

On another note, the Irish Derby is to be run in the evening for the first time. It is a very brave move by The Curragh but I am sure it will be a great success. Camelot will certainly be a tremendous attraction.
