Clear, blue sky first thing

"Treat people, as if they were what they ought to be and you help them to become what they are capable of being."

A clear, blue sky first thing but heavy clouds that look rather threatening soon rolled in and there has been a chill in the wind. After the work yesterday, most of first and second lot have been having a canter up Warren Hill and a nice pick of grass, over on Long Hill, on the way home; those that did not gallop have gone down for a second canter.

At the end of day one of the Royal Ascot tipping competition, Phil is keeping up the pressure after Cheltenham, showing only a modest loss of 74p, whereas Mark is down £3.62. So, with it all to play for, here are Tuesday's selections:

2.30: Red Jazz - MHT, Free Judgement - Phil

3.05: Antara - MHT and Phil

3.50: Twice Over - MHT, Byword - Phil

4.25: Smokey Oakey (Fareer) - MHT, Acrostic - Phil

5.00: Maqaasid - MHT, Moonlit Garden - Phil

5.30: Pollenator - MHT, Safina - Phil

Smokey Oakey runs in the Hunt Cup this afternoon at 4.25pm, where he is drawn in the middle at 18 in a field of 30 and the ground is still good but getting a shade on the fast side. The horse has been in great form at home and, I am hopeful, that he will run a reasonable race.

Royal Ascot got off to a great start with that fantastic mare, Goldikova, winning her ninth Group/Grade 1 race (only Miesque has won ten) and taking her lifetime earnings to nearly £2.7 million. We do see horses of her calibre very often and she is truly one to savour. The weather looks set fair for the week, which will be good news for the ladies and the crowd was up on last year, which will please the Ascot executive.
