A warm night with the temperature rising quickly this morning but a pleasant and welcome breeze makes it bearable. The horses have been cantering up Warren and Long Hill and the breeze is stopping them from sweating too badly, which is important, if they are not to lose too much of their body salts and minerals.

No runners today with all this firm ground and our three entries in the Northumberland Plate look like being balloted out, which is really frustrating. There is a chance that Dazinski could make it as a reserve but when you have had this race in mind for him all winter and he loves the fast ground, it is pretty irritating to be denied a run. These lower safety limits mean that it is very difficult to get a run with horses rated lower than 90 in these valuable, early-closing handicaps, which seems unfair and wrong.

Brushing won the Cumberland Plate yesterday at Carlisle in game style and Kieren Fallon summed her up in his post-race remark, when he said,''She's tough as nails''. She is also another winner from our breeding programme at Dullingham Park Stud, as she is out of the lovely mare, Seasonal Blossom, that I trained. Her toughness and consistency are a credit to Angie and all the stud staff, who give them such a good start in life.

At last, we saw a glimmer of what the England team are capable of producing - let us hope that it was due to more than the pint of beer they had the night before - but we must remember that this was Slovenia and not Germany. They will have to lift their game again if they are to win on Sunday but they have done it before when their backs are to the wall, so we do not travel without hope!
