"A strong attractive colt. Good outlook and mover who is cantering well with the rest of the string on the heath. He looks like he will be able to run from May onwards. By a sire we have always done well with." (January 2008)

Pacemaker magazine has reported Mark Tompkins to be the top buyer of yearlings at Tattersalls. He attends the major yearling sales every autumn. Once budgets and orders have been agreed, your request can be included in Mark's search for the 'cream of the crop' of young stock.
Below are some of his comments from the News page in the autumn of 2007:
"This last month we have bought some fantastic horses at unbelievably good prices. This is where our hard work has paid off - we have looked at almost every horse at each sale and therefore have managed to find some exciting prospects.
"As I have said here before, the pedigree can sometimes set the price. But the horses we choose have merit all of their own. We buy yearlings that in our opinion must have potential as racehorses - this means we do not buy just the pedigree, even though we get bombarded by all the vendors at the sales giving us updates of what the family of the yearling that you are looking at has done - placed in a Listed race, won a maiden etc. - even horses back in the third generation are mentioned! This never means a jot to us. Athleticism, good-looks, great outlook and correct conformation are what we are looking for - genuine racehorses and potential winners.
"Whether we are spending £2,000 or £200,000 the same selection process is followed. We finally reach our 'to-buy' list - some of which I bought last week, but some of those on the list sold for far more than I thought they were worth. There was only one horse that I was disappointed I did not buy - a colt that made £135,000 - and I would have paid that for him as I thought he was worth every penny! Most of our Irish purchases would have made double or treble in the recent sales - and therefore are great value. So, don't be put off by the ridiculous prices paid by others over the last ten days."
Spending a fortune on horses does not necessarily mean having winners as Mark has shown with his shrewd purchases, including Cool Edge (bought at a cost of approximately £750 and went on to win over £100,000 in prize-money), Babodana (bought for approximately £15,000 and has gone on to win over £200,000 in prize-money) and Steenberg (bought for 12,500 guineas and has gone on to win over £220,000 in prize-money).
To register your interest in any of the horses, please contact the office on 01638 661434.
Please note that the purchase prices are plus VAT and will increase by £2,000 per month to reflect the costs incurred as each horse is prepared for racing.
